Liberal arts alums in classes this week

The College of Liberal Arts and Education is celebrating Alumni Week through Friday.
Many successful grads visited classes on Monday and Tuesday and will continue throughout the rest of the week.
Organizers hope that the student interaction with alumni who have made it in their fields will inspire students along their career paths after graduation.

Voices of homeless resonate on stage

The recent production of "Unheard Voices" was incredible.
Several actors (some of whom are professionals) portrayed different homeless people and told their stories in the words of specific homeless people.
The stories themselves were transcribed word for word from interviews of homeless people throughout Detroit.

Students to serve communities during break

Alternative Spring Break, which University Ministry has been hosting for the past 20 years, is on its way to another year of charitable service in six cities across the country.
From March 6-13, UDM participants will be in California, Ohio, West Virginia, Mississippi, South Carolina and Texas, working toward a common goal of gaining a better insight into the world around them.

Alumni group warms spirits with chocolate

Students got a chance to take a break from studying for midterms Feb. 24 and enjoy a mug of hot chocolate, thanks to the Alumni Association.
In addition to a free mug and a hot beverage, the association offered praise and attention for the hard work and support graduates dedicate to the University of Detroit Mercy.

UDM Intramural crowns two billiards champions

When most students think of intramural sports, they probably envision playing soccer, basketball or football.
On last Friday, that stereotype was shattered when UDM Intramural held its first billiards tournament near the Titan Fit Zone.
The almost three-hour event saw 14 competitors, eight competing in the advanced bracket and the other six dueling it out in the beginner bracket.

GSA President Dustin Jackson, 21, has found the UDM campus to be accepting of gays.
"One thing you should know about me is that I try to be open and honest," said Jackson. "I am definitely gay and out as far as on campus and haven't had any issues so far."
He has encountered bad situations beyond the campus, though, such as being called names and receiving nasty looks.

UDM alliance brings together straight and gay students

The Gay Straight Alliance has risen and fallen and risen again repeatedly over its ten years at the University of Detroit Mercy.
As of December, the group is back in action after a period of inactivity.
The lapse was a result of several of the group's leaders leaving UDM to study abroad last year.

Poetry deadline approaches for Randall contest

March 17 is the deadline for UDO annual Dudley Randall student poetry contest.
The contest is named after the late Dudley Randall, a poet who also worked in the campus library and who also judged the contest until his death in 2000.
Prof. Claire Crabtree knew Randall personally.
