Established in 1918, The Varsity News is the student newspaper of the University of Detroit Mercy, published every other week on Wednesdays. Its staff aspires to produce an informative, entertaining newspaper and to report news truthfully, fairly and courageously. The Varsity News is written, edited, designed and run by students. Such independence allows the publication to fulfill its primary educational objectives: to be a student forum for the free expression of information and ideas, and to provide an invaluable, realistic learning experience for student staff members. A faculty adviser works with students to develop their skills and potential and to encourage their growth as ethical journalists. But all content decisions are made by student editors.
