General Motors

Public Policy Intern, Energy and Environment, General Motors Public Policy Center

About the Public Policy Center

The Energy and Environment team within the Public Policy Center supports GM's global product development and compliance efforts with government regulations affecting the auto industry. Key regulations at the heart of the team's work include federal fuel economy and greenhouse gas emissions standards, as well as state-based initiatives and zero-emission vehicle mandates. Through positive partnerships, our team liaises with regulators, NGOs, and other automotive companies to define policies that collectively support our operations, customers, and communities.

About the Internship

The intern's primary responsibility is to provide analytical support to the Energy and Environment team. Typically, this involves pursuing independent projects over the course of the summer while also working closely with one or more team members to support ongoing workload.

During the summer, we expect the intern to be prepared to quickly gather and evaluate information related to their project(s), conduct independent research, and perform quantitative analysis. Interns work under the direct supervision of an experienced manager on the Energy and Environment team, but are expected to be self-starters, work well independently, and leverage the skills and knowledge gained as part of their graduate studies in public policy analysis. At the end of the summer, the intern will present on their project(s) and findings to senior Public Policy Center staff.

Examples of projects and work undertaken by previous interns include:

Equity-focused analysis of access to Maven, GM's carsharing platform, and means of expanding access for the unbanked

Development and evaluation of what if scenarios for automotive-sector greenhouse gas emissions in the context of U.S. commitments to the Paris Climate Treaty

Examination of federal government (EPA) greenhouse gas emissions modeling to identify and critique technical and economic assumptions supporting federal fuel economy and greenhouse gas emissions standards

Interns can expect their work products to most often take the form of spreadsheet-based analyses, brief written summaries and presentations, and data visualizations using Tableau software. Strong candidates will have robust quantitative skills and experience working with and manipulating data using Microsoft Excel.

The internship is based at GM's global headquarters in Detroit, MI. Regular travel to other campuses within southeast Michigan will be required.

This is a paid internship opportunity.
