This is a remote position, the selected candidate can reside and perform the work from anywhere within the United States. About The Public Policy Center The Energy and Environment team within the Public Policy Center supports GM's global product development and compliance efforts with government regulations affecting the auto industry. Key regulations at the heart of the team's work include federal fuel economy and greenhouse gas emissions standards, as well as state-based initiatives and zero-emission vehicle mandates. Through positive partnerships, our team works with regulators, NGOs, and other automotive companies to define policies that collectively support our operations, customers, and communities. About The Internship The intern's primary responsibility is to provide analytical support to the Energy and Environment team. Typically, this involves pursuing independent projects over the course of the summer while also working closely with one or more team members to support ongoing workload. During the summer, we expect the intern to be prepared to quickly gather and evaluate information related to their project(s), conduct independent research, and perform quantitative analysis. Interns work under the direct supervision of an experienced manager on the Energy and Environment team, but are expected to be self-starters, work well independently, and leverage the skills and knowledge gained as part of their graduate studies in public policy analysis. At the end of the summer, the intern will present on their project(s) and findings to senior Public Policy staff. Examples of projects and work undertaken by previous interns include: - Equity-focused analysis of access to Maven, GM's former carsharing platform, and means of expanding access for the unbanked - Development and evaluation of what if scenarios for automotive-sector greenhouse gas emissions in the context of U.S. commitments to the Paris Climate Accord - Examination of federal government (EPA) greenhouse gas emissions modeling to identify and critique technical and economic assumptions supporting federal fuel economy and greenhouse gas emissions standards - Development of a white paper evaluating obstacles to providing residential EV charging access to all households, and making relevant policy recommendations to inform GM advocacy Interns can expect their work products to take the form of spreadsheet-based analyses, written summaries and presentations, and data visualizations using Tableau software. Strong candidates will have robust quantitative and writing skills, and experience working with and manipulating data using Microsoft Excel. Qualifications Additional - Currently pursuing a graduate degree - Must have a minimum of a 3.0 overall GPA on a 4.0 scale - Demonstrates leadership in field of study, extra-curricular activities or service organizations - Able to work full time - 40 hours per week during the summer months - Ability to travel between other Metro-Detroit campuses - Strong ability to manipulate data in Microsoft Excel - Experience in spreadsheet-based analyses, brief written summaries and presentations, and data visualizations using Tableau software Desired Skills - Outstanding interpersonal and relationship management skills with the ability to optimally collaborate with varying levels of the organization as needed - Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to distill complex subjects to a wider audience - Emerging partnership and collaboration skills and ability to learn from and share knowledge with co-workers in a fast-paced environment - High level of integrity, ability to deal with ambiguity, takes initiative/self-directed - Evidence of strong character with integrity, honesty, accountability and trust - Consistently demonstrates innovative thinking that is customer-centric PLEASE ONLY APPLY IF YOU DO NOT NEED SPONSORSHIP TO WORK IN THE UNITED STATES NOW OR IN THE FUTURE. The median level of the monthly salary compensation for this role is $4500 dependent upon class status and degree. Benefit options are not available for this role.
