        A former UDM student who became a professor after working as a migrant farmworker and activist will discuss her experiences on Friday, Feb. 17, at 7 p.m. in the Fountain Lounge. Dr. Estrella Torrez will give a lecture titled "Testimonios of Migrants, Chicana Studies and Indigenous Youth Empowerment.

    Senior gift organizers hope to attract more than 100 participants

        The senior class gift committee has decided what the class of 2012 will leave UDM, and it will spend the next few months raising money with a series of events. The goal is to help furnish a 2,586 sq. ft. student lounge area that will be a part of the new Fitness Center.

  • Latin music to fill lounge Monday

        BombaRica is coming to the University of Detroit Mercy Monday, Feb. 20. The Fountain Lounge will be filled Latin-American music and culture for one hour starting at noon. BombaRica is a locally based musical band that has appeared multiple times in and around Detroit and was founded by Osvaldo ("Ozzie") Rivera and Consuela Lopez.

  • ARTchitects show aims to draw art across campus

        UDM's School of Architecture will host its second ARTchitects Art Show Feb. 20-29. Student leaders of the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) introduced the show last year to inject some excitement into campus life. The show is not only for architecture students; it is a chance for all UDM students to collectively show off their artistic talent.

  • Meal conversion limit draws anger

        In a move that has outraged some UDM students, University Dining Services has begun enforcing meal-conversion limits at all cafés and cafeterias on campus. Students purchasing food from the Titan Dining Room, The Loft, Titan To-Go, Simply To-Go and Subway could have their transactions affected by a reduction in the number of allowable meal conversions.

Most of these improvements were gifts donated by alumni, former students at the university.

  • Boutte ready to move on after trial

    Freshman guard says he has learned from mistake

      Four months after his arrest in Ann Arbor, freshman P.J. Boutte is ready to put the event behind him. Boutte was sentenced Wednesday, Feb. 8, to one year of probation for possessing a stun gun and alcohol in an Oct. 9 arrest in Ann Arbor. In addition, the UDM freshman will pay a combined $1,247 in costs and fines.

        The hectic lives of UDM students barely allow them time for a decent meal, let alone a relaxing spiritual retreat. But University Ministry has a solution for that. Twice a year, the ministry team hosts a retreat – the Busy Person's Retreat (BPR) – that is personally tailored to the individual student's schedule.
