From anime to sports, orgs. seek new members

The University of Detroit Mercy may be a small school but the amount of student organizations is anything but.

Following the annual Celebrate Spirit celebration, all students, faculty and staff were invited to the picnic luncheon and campus organization fair.

Fifty-five organizations had tables with information available. These touched on subjects ranging from motorsports and pep band to Greek life and the model United Nations.

Navigating through the sea of students was a challenge with so many organizations.

At the Chemistry Club table, Sabina Kurtovic was eager to great every guest and tell them about all Chem Club has to offer.

“Chem Club is so much fun,” she said. “We blow stuff up.”

Further down the row of tables was the Muslim Student Organization. Mona Hammoud was representing for the group.

“We do a lot of community service, and we host events on campus, like the interfaith dinner and International Night,” Hammoud said.

Model United Nations was another group that was drawing a crowd.

Nawrooz Putris, vice president, gave out information about the organization.

“We go to a conference with many other schools, and we are all assigned a country, and then we have to debate,” Putris said. “But in the end, we all have to come to an agreement.”

UDM Links was almost stationed in the middle of all the tables and saw a lot of traffic.

Sabrina Baghaie was collecting students to tell about the organization.

“We go to other clubs and facilitate discussion,” she said. “We want people to break out of their social groups and talk about things as a whole.”

Further down the seemingly endless lines of tables, the Student Social Work Association was determined to get some sign-ups.

“You don’t have to be a social work major in order to participate,” said Krista Norred. “We do a lot of community service, including helping with Campus Kitchens.”

Among the University Organizations was the Career Education Center.

Assistant Dean Elissa Clemons and two additional career counselors handed out information sheets and talked to many prospective students about new career options, making appointments, and upcoming events, such as the Fall Career Fair on Oct. 8.

University Recreation and the Titan Fitness Center representatives were also excited to showcase their new happenings.

This fall, University Recreation has introduced the URec Adventure Series.

With so many organizations on campus, there is something for nearly everyone.

“I always enjoy going to the org fairs,” said biology major Brie Wilcox. “It’s a really good way for all of the freshmen to see all of our different groups.”
