McNichols entrance getting a new look

UDM’s McNichols Road entrance is getting a facelift.

Beginning today, Oct. 7, the McNichols entrance will be closed for renovations.

Renderings of the new entrance show a more decorative archway and two entry lanes for incoming vehicles. The changes will allow visitors in one lane and a continuous flow for students and faculty with permits in the other.

In the meantime, entry off McNichols will be through a temporary entrance farther east towards Fairfield Street, near the multi-purpose athletic field.

The new entrance is scheduled to be done by the start of the winter semester.

Adams selected by pro lacrosse squad

Another former UDM student-athlete has been drafted into a professional league.

Lacrosse player Shayne Adams was selected by the Vancouver Stealth in the second round, 21st overall, of the 2015 National Lacrosse League draft on Sept. 28.

Adams is UDM’s all-time leader in points and goals scored, games played, man-up goals and hat tricks.

A four-time all-MAAC selection, Adams was also the conference’s rookie of the year as a freshman.

Three Titans have now been drafted into the NLL. Joel Matthews, drafted in 2012, and Jordan Houtby, drafted in 2013, preceded Adams

Crime increased, latest report says

Crimes increased in 2014 but remained low, according to the 2015 annual security and fire safety report, released recently by the University of Detroit Mercy Department of Public Safety (DPS).

The McNichols campus recorded one campus burglary, up from zero the year before, as well as one report each of dating violence and domestic violence, up from zero the year before.

There was one on-campus arrest for weapon possession in 2014, and five disciplinary referrals for drug abuse violations, up from two in 2013.

Sixty on-campus student housing liquor law violations were logged in 2014, up from 35 in 2013.

Motor vehicle thefts dropped to one from two in 2013, and there were no reports of robbery last year, compared to three in 2013, according to the release
