Black history events features authors

UDM is celebrating Black History Month with several upcoming events.

On Thursday, Feb. 18, UDM will be hosting a book signing, panel discussion and reception for the book “A Fluid Frontier: Slavery, Resistance and the Underground Railroad in the Detroit River Borderland.”

The book consists of a collection of contributions from authors and editors and emphasizes “the strong and enduring bonds of family, faith and resistance that formed between communities in Michigan and what is now Ontario,” according to a release.

Editors Karolyn Smardz Frost and Veta Tucker will lead the discussion. The event will run from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom.

Attendees will have the opportunity to purchase a copy of the book and get it signed by the editors.

On Wednesday, Feb. 17, speaker Patrick McGarrity will appear from noon to 1 p.m. in the President’s Dining Room.

McGarrity’s talk is titled “The Civil Rights Movement and the Northern Ireland Struggle.”
