Key 'sixth man' Cohen wants taste of big dance

Brianne Cohen has great potential but remains humble as she gets close to her goals.

The six-foot forward from Toronto went to York Memorial High School, and has made her mark with the Titans women’s basketball team.

Cohen won the Sixth Man of the Year award. She also was named Horizon League Player of the Week on Feb. 6.

Cohen agreed to an interview with The Varsity News.

How did the season go for you?

This season was a great learning experience for the team as well as our coaches. We started off rocky dropping the first four, I believe, and we started to think we would use this as a rebuilding year seeing as we only had nine players. As the season went on, it started rolling and things got better. It was a great season overall and we have a lot to look forward to next year seeing as we are all returning.

How was playing for Coach Scott?

Coach Scott is an amazing coach. He had incorporated so many new aspects into the women’s program such as family barbeques, holiday events and more promotional opportunities to include the community. Playing for coach Scott has increased my confidence as well as my skills as an athlete.

You received the Sixth Man of the Year award. How does it feel?

This was another milestone in my career here that I could not have achieved without my teammates and coaches. I could have never imagined I would have won the Sixth Man of the Year after the tough season that I had last year. The support that I have gotten from old coaches, friends at home and my peers on campus was very appreciated and I hope I can continue to get better.

What are your expectations for next year?

Next year I expect to end up at the top of the Horizon League for sure. My goal is to go to the “big dance” at the NCAA tournament. I also expect to grow as a team and as an individual for the benefit of the program.

How is this year better than last?

Last year was my rookie year and it was used for a lot of learning. I did not have much in game experience until late into our conference games. I feel like once I had a chance to play this year I took advantage of it because I knew how it felt not to play. Once I became more confident, it seemed like everything just flowed, which was a great feeling. I am so grateful for the opportunity to be a Titan.
