New apartment style housing to be built south of UDM campus

A new privately-funded off-campus housing complex, to be located directly behind Shiple Hall off Puritan Ave., is in the process of being approved by the Detroit City Council.

In 2011, an alum approached the university about building the 350-bed apartments that would provide a place for upperclassmen and graduate students to live within close proximity to the university. Currently, Shiple Hall, Holden Hall and the four Quads are the only on-campus living options.

Detroit Mercy officials are planning to expand the south gate to include the new housing within it.

“Because an increasing number of students want to live on campus, we are very confident that this will be a successful endeavor,” UDM President Antoine Garibaldi said in a speech earlier this year.

Detroit Mercy Public Safety will patrol the new complex, but all other operations will be handled by the developer.

The developer is hoping to gain city council approval and break ground on the project within this calendar year.
