Fitness Center adds events, classes, equipment
A new school year means new changes and additions to University Recreation and the Student Fitness Center.
As always, URec is offering several new fitness classes this semester, including AM:BC, barre, beach body and SYNERGY X, as well as several returning classes, like yoga, kettlebell, cardio bootcamp and butts and guts.
There is a $1 drop-in fee for all classes, or students can buy a punch card to attend 15 classes for $10. AM:BC is an 8-week program with a $5 drop-in fee or $20 for the duration of the class.
All fitness classes are free this week as a trial period for students.
Matt Chesley, who teaches several fitness classes and is URec’s NASM certified personal trainer, is also offering personal training in the Fitness Center. Students are eligible for discounted training.
URec is also continuing the Adventure Series, with a Sunset Detroit kayak trip on Sep. 23. It costs $20 for Detroit Mercy students and $35 for non-students.
The Adventure Series will also feature a trip to The Adventure Park in West Bloomfield on Oct. 20. Obstacles, zip lines and high ropes are just some of the challenges The Adventure Park has to offer. Registration is required, and tickets for students are $15 and $25 for non-students.
There are also a few new intramural sports this semester, including cornhole, kickball, and home run derby. Returning intramurals include floor hockey, basketball, dodgeball, ultimate frisbee and volleyball.
The Fitness Center will also have a new Synergy exercise system installed this week.
Along with the new exercise equipment, Tommy’s Smoothies and Snacks will be offering some new choices.
Tommy’s has partnered with Avalon International Breads to offer meal and snack options that are organic and locally sourced to provide healthier choices for students and faculty. Tommy’s will now offer salads, sandwiches and treats from Avalon.
During homecoming week, URec will be hosting a Decades Dash, which will feature a 1980s themed 5K and a family fun run. Upon registration, students will receive a $5 discount, a tee-shirt, a $5 food truck voucher, and snacks after the race.
