Election 2016: between a rock and a hard place

By SCOTT SCHAIBLE/ LAYOUT EDITOR

As the election approaches and tensions seem to rise I keep asking myself: how did this all happen, how did it come down to these two people, and how am I supposed to pick from them?

I have heard a lot of discussion about not voting or voting for the green or independent party. I have even heard that you should pick the candidate you hate the least.

It seems that we as Americans have put these people here.

I have read a lot on the fact we can’t complain since we are the ones who voted in the primary to elect these candidates. Well, here we are, stuck in the middle of a rock and a hard place.

Who to vote for and do we vote at all?

Michael Gregory Rowe, former host of “Dirty Jobs,” recently made a good point when responding to a fan’s request to encourage people to go out and vote. He said that voting is a right, just as buying an AR-15 is a right, however it doesn't mean anyone should do it.

His point is that just because you can vote doesn't mean you should.

Are you informed? Are you aware of all the policies that would change or be adjusted if one candidate wins vs. the other? Are familiar with everything that the candidates have done in the past when it comes to law making decisions/funding other politicians/scandals?

If you can answer yes to all of those things then you are the right person to vote.

I know what some may say, voting isn't killing anyone, and my response would be isn't it killing this country if you vote wrong? What if that candidate sends America to a war we don't belong in? What if they put America in a spot we don't belong and we lose American lives?

Those votes do matter and it is not something to be taken lightly.

Now I will admit I have not voted with this mind frame in the past, to be honest I have voted like it was American Idol and voted for the one I wanted to see win, not run this country.

However when it comes to this election I have a lot of conviction on my heart and I know this will not be an easy decision.

But what I would recommend to all those people who plan on voting for the lesser of two evils or those who don't plan on voting: Do a little research on everyone on the ballot and see if there is something good that can come from all this bad. Maybe there is hope for America after all. Maybe we don't have to make America great again or vote for a candidate solely based on their sex. Maybe we could vote for someone outside of the two major political parties. Maybe it is time for a change.
