Off campus eateries abound
Do you ever get tired of eating on campus?
You probably answered yes, just like everybody else.
The University of Detroit Mercy has done a nice job by offering better food choices on campus in recent years, but sometimes that just isn't enough.
Students want to get out and explore the restaurants in the area, and they have many options right on Livernois Avenue.
First is Kuzzo's Chicken & Waffles.
Kuzzo's is a casual restaurant that serves breakfast and southern dishes like fried chicken and waffles all day.
Kuzzo's is one of the newer restaurants on the Livernois strip, opening last year. Since then, it’s become a favorite not only on Detroit Mercy’s McNichols campus, but in the city as well.
Students said the best thing to come out of Kuzzo's is the multi-flavored Kool-Aid drinks and the infamous red velvet waffle.
However, even though the food is top notch, the service could be much better.
Several freshman students visited Kuzzo's for the first time to see what the hype was all about but were disappointed in how slow the service was.
"I guess it depends on the time of day you go, because I always go at night and it's always busy so I just deal with it,” said sophomore Eryn Hearns.
Another favorite on Livernois is Nicky D's Coney Island.
Nicky D's is a favorite at Detroit Mercy because not only is it good food at lower prices but they're open twenty-four hours.
So, even if it’s 3 a.m. you can either order your food to go, or sit and enjoy your meal.
Nicky D's is known for their corn beef but many students love ordering breakfast after a long night, whether it be there huge stack of pancakes or a three-egg omelets.
There’s another Coney Island about a block away – U of D Coney Island.
Even though they have part of our university name they are not affiliated with the school in any way.
A few students at Detroit Mercy prefer U of D over Nicky D's, including senior Artona Millhouse.
Millhouse said "the food tastes better and I’ts faster service than Nicky D's."
U of D Coney is a bit smaller than Nicky D's but that doesn't slow down their service at all.
Patricia Paulus, a waitress there, said they get more business from faculty/staff at Detroit Mercy then students.
"We see a lot more employees from Detroit Mercy than anything else," said Paulus.
