'Footsall,' ice skating, darts on tap at fitness center

On January 24, 2017

From intramural games to off-campus adventures, Detroit Mercy’s Fitness Center offers a number of options to help students stay fit and involved.

The center has state-of-the-art equipment, as well as a track and full-sized basketball courts – all of which are accessible to students.

But the center also hosts a variety of programs.

The university is currently offering dodgeball, volleyball, table tennis, basketball and other intramural sports, which are free to students.

Basketball began on Jan. 23. Though registration is closed for this particular sport, students are encouraged to sign up when offered again – or for a different sport that the fitness center offers.

Intramural basketball is a four-game, four-week season capped by a week of playoffs in the fitness center.

But the championship game will be held in Calihan Hall.

A basketball skills challenge is being planned to showcase students’ talents in free-throw and three-point competitions.

After the intramural basketball season ends, the table tennis and dodgeball competitions will begin, starting as early as March 3. They will be followed by footsall, which is three vs. three soccer, with registration ending March 30.

Footsall and basketball are the only two intramural sports offered that are not one-day tournaments.

Matt Higley, coordinator of fitness center activities, is also excited about the new adventure series he’s launching this semester.

The first adventure event offered will be ice skating on Friday, Jan. 27, 10:15 p.m to 12:15 a.m, at John Lindell Ice Arena  in Royal Oak.

“Last year I had over 100 people come out and expect a great turnout as well this go-round,” said Higley.

The next event in the adventure series will occur in February as Detroit Mercy students head to Detroit Dart Club. Transportation will be provided.
