Spirit Week, which began Monday, is proving to be like no other.
The festivities began Monday with Twin Day, followed by Opposite Sex Day on Tuesday, and Pajama Day on Wednesday.
Detroit Mercy’s Student Life hopes to increase school spirit with exciting events for students, faculty and alumni.
“The focal point of Spirit Week are the competition games between men’s and women’s basketball against Oakland,” noted Adam Hollmann, assistant director of Student Life.
The men’s game will be on Friday at 7 p.m., and the women’s Pink Game will be on Saturday at 1 p.m.
The tenth annual Casino Night will be held tonight, Wednesday, in the Fountain Lounge beginning at 7 p.m. It is open to all students.
Students can play table games like blackjack, and accumulate tickets in order to receive big prizes. This year’s grand prize is a PlayStation 4 Gaming System. Other prizes include HD televisions, a FitBit and more.
The event is free.
“Last year we had about 200 to 250 students participate and I’m excited to see this year’s turnout,” Hollmann said.
The day after will be Grandparents Day.
Gracie Roberts-Hare, a sophomore, will be among those participating.
“I’m excited to dress up in and participate in Spirit Week,” she said. “It takes me back to the fun events we did in high school.”
On the night of Thursday, Feb. 8, Student Life and University Ministry will partner for an interfaith dinner in the Architecture Building.
This event will aim to bring unity to those who practice different faiths on campus.
On Friday, Spirit Day will lead up to that evening’s basketball game.
Students should sport their favorite Detroit Mercy gear throughout the day and night.
For the women’s game Saturday, students are encouraged to wear pink. The women will be sporting their all-pink uniforms.
