San Diego State next up for Titans
The women’s lacrosse team heads into its Sunday match against San Diego State with a 1-1 record.
The Titans did not start the season the way they had hoped, falling 24-9 to Norte Dame Feb. 11.
But they upended Butler 20-9 Feb. 18 in their second game, and expectations remain high for the rest of the season.
The coaches and players expect to be in the same position they were last year, making it to the Horizon League championship game.
Last year the team lost in heart-breaking fashion 11-10 to Old Dominion in overtime.
This year the Titans hope to change their fortunes and win the league.
Great team chemistry may play a role.
“They really enjoy spending time together off the field,” said head coach Laurie Merian. “That chemistry transfers to on the field.”
She said it helps the team communicate better, allowing players to read one other, leading to dynamic plays.
An obstacle that might obstruct the path to a championship is the team’s tendency to play down against competition not viewed as on the same level.
“Learning how to stay consistent has been a little bit of a struggle,” said Merian.
Communication is always an important factor in lacrosse, but it is even more apparent for the Titans this year as they continue to learn a new defensive system that the coaches installed this year.
Early in this season, multiple players have stepped forward for this squad.
Merian spotlighted two Titans in the attack position.
Lexi Kinmond, a sophomore from Peterborough, Ontario, has shown great leadership skills on the offensive end, she said.
Jordyn Beam has also impressed Merian.
“She is going to be a big threat on attack this year,” she noted.
At the midfield position, Merian is excited about returning Freshman of the Year Kaitlyn Wandelt of Sayville, NY.
“She is always a strong leader on both offense and defense,” said Merian.
Junior captain Lauren Webley is a standout on defense for the Titans and one of the best communicators on the team.
Every week, the team sets a goal to achieve victory.
This week the squad’s goal is to play at its level, make smart decisions and perform as one unit.
“If we do those things, we will be successful and we will come out with a win,” said Merian prior to the Butler game.
