On March 28, 2017

CLASA – the Carney Latin American Solidarity Archive – is hosting several events at Detroit Mercy in the coming days.

These are among the highlights, all free and open to the public:

  • Wednesday, March 29, 4 p.m., C&F 139: Tony Nelson of Mexico Solidarity Network will present (via Skype) Sergio Pacheco, organizer with the Tlanezi Calli Housing Cooperative of Mexico City.
He will speak on “Homes for People, not for Profit” and is touring our region with the Mexico Solidarity Network.
  • Thursday, March 30, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., Briggs 317: Mary Walle will present her research on the history of the sanctuary movement in Detroit.

“Mary consulted the Carney Archive and did area interviews in writing her thesis on Detroiters who helped St. Rita’s Catholic Church to offer refuge to Central Americans fleeing violence in their home countries,” said Gail Presbey, director of CLASA.

Detroit Mercy students will create an exhibit of Carney Archive materials related to her topic and these items will be on display in the McNichols library lobby through April.
  • Friday, March 31, 10 a.m. and 11 a.m., C&F 209: In honor of Cesar Chavez Day, CLASA will host two talks on the topic of migrants.

At 10 a.m., Joan Smith will report on her nine months of volunteer service at Casa del Migrante, a house for migrants run by the Scalabrini order in Guatemala.

At 11 a.m., Luis Zaldana, Macomb County Hispanic ministry director for the Archdiocese of Detroit, will speak about the challenges of supporting undocumented immigrants in Macomb County.
