Campus Kitchen's free movie night Jan. 31

Film highlights food issues

On January 23, 2018

Campus Kitchen is a service-learning and leadership development organization focused on reducing food waste and increasing access to healthy food.

The organization, coordinated on campus by Clara Gamalski, is partnering with the Detroit Food Policy Council to host a free movie night and panel discussion about food waste on Wednesday, Jan. 31, 5:30-8:30 p.m., in the ballroom.

The 2014 movie, “Just Eat It,” explores the issue of food waste and food rescue from farm to retail to fridge.

It is estimated that 40 percent of all food produced in the United States is wasted each year – even though one in six Americans lacks access to adequate amounts of healthy food.

Following the film screening, local leaders from the restaurant, distribution, educational and policy sectors will discuss current efforts to reduce food waste in Detroit.

“I think everyone should go,” said graduate student Kelsi Pritchard, who plans to attend. “People don’t realize how serious ‘eating clean’ is.”

She said it makes for a much better lifestyle.

“And I’m interested to learn how much food really gets wasted,” she said.

The film won awards at festivals and is now being shown all over the world.

The filmmakers even created a curriculum discussion guide.
