The Detroit Titans family has been stunned by news of the death of sports broadcaster Cliff Russell.
Russell, 61, died of a heart attack Sunday evening at a Chicago hotel.
The men’s basketball team was in town for a game, and Russell was there to broadcast it, staying at the same hotel.
A media veteran with his own show on Detroit radio, Russell also served as the voice of the Titans and brought a unique perspective to his work.
Though a native of Detroit, he played basketball at the University of Texas El Paso, eventually transferring to Wayne State and finishing his college career there.
Those who knew him described Russell as a humble, caring and thoughtful man.
He brought a spark to the men’s team, whether giving advice to players or helping coaches do drills on the road.
“He was always filled with joy. Every time I talked to him he was happy to be here or grateful for his opportunity,” said freshman forward Jack Ballantyne.
Given Russell’s loving personality, many Detroit Mercy sutdent-athletes were devastated by his death.
“I am saddened by what has happened. He was such a good person and he really cared for everyone,” said sophomore guard Corey Allen. “It just doesn’t feel right.”
Russell is survived by his wife, three brothers, six children, two stepsons and seven grandchildren.
