Detroit Mercy’s Wellness Center will be hosting its annual health fair on Thursday, Oct. 18, noon to 2:30 p.m., in the Fountain Lounge.

The free event aims to help students and staff connect mind, body and spirit.

Free food and raffle prizes from such vendors as AAA, Aetna and DPAC will be part of the festivities.

University health professionals will be administering flu shots and other vaccinations, which are fully covered for students who carry Aetna Student Health Insurance. (If you are unsure what Aetna Health Insurance offers, there will be a booth where questions will be answered.)

Counseling sessions will be available through the center.

Anyone can meet with a licensed clinical phycologist, social worker or mental health counselor.

All professional outpatient counseling and psychotherapeutic treatments are completely confidential and available to students at no charge.

For those seeking a more holistic approach, the Wellness Center will be offering tools to combat life’s sometimes-unavoidable stresses.

Professionals will be giving massages and offering chiropractic care, and mindful yoga will be taking place around the Fountain Lounge.

The university’s various health programs (nursing, dental, physician assistant) will be represented, as well.

“The programs will be offering information … in addition to providing giveaways at their tables,” said Kristen Salem, a personal counselor at the university.

As examples, Salem said, “Nursing will be giving free blood-pressure screening, and the dental students will be providing information about the effects of smoking, along with general oral hygiene information and resources.”

Walk-in inquiries are accepted Monday through Friday in West Quad room 104.
