Winter Intramural Sports have returned to the Detroit Mercy campus, hosted by the Fitness Center on campus.

Registration is underway for team handball, four-on-four volleyball, a euchre tournament, bubble soccer, five-on-five basketball.

Matt Higley, assistant director of University Recreation, said that a week before the semester begins registration for all the sports opens.

This year for the bubble soccer league has purchased its own bubbles for the soccer league, which will involve participation twice a week for two weeks and the playoffs.

Higley doesn’t have a finished schedule for the next season so if there is something that someone would like to request or knows of other students who would want to be a part of it, they should contact him.

Some tournaments are one-day events, which makes it easier for some students to participate without having to dedicate too much time.

But the leagues require more of a commitment, he noted.

There are multiple meetups and events in those cases.

Higley emphasized that intramural sports are free for all students, faculty and staff, and he encourages people to join and have fun.

Sebastian Carlesso is a sophomore in the nursing program and participates in intramurals.

“Last year went well and this year I participated in intramural basketball,” he said. “Intramural sports give me a break from school and let me have fun with my friends.”

After the tournaments are over, winners are recognized on Detroit Mercy social media sites like Facebook and Instagram.

Prizes are awarded to the winners of the tournaments, too.

The ping pong, pickelball and basketball skills events have already been held but many other options are open for sign-up right now.
