Puppies, pancakes, video fun on tap for Dead Week

As finals approach, stress can become intense.

So Detroit Mercy departments have scheduled many activities and events to calm nerves during Dead Week, when faculty normally do not assign major projects.

The only downside to Dead Week is the studying that goes in for final exams.

Here are some events you can attend to destress, wind down and calm your nerves.  

Monday, April 15: Detroit Mercy x Extra Life

A video game charity stream will be held all day in the Fitness Center.

It is being sponsored by the Anime Club and will last 12 hours.

Students and faculty can purchase food for $1 per item while playing video games.  

“All proceeds from food and donations go to benefit Beaumont Children’s Hospital in Royal Oak,” said Timothy Nelson from marketing. “This is all possible through the non-profit organization Extra Life.”

Also on Monday, a KCP library workshop will be held at 3:30 p.m.

Tuesday, April 16: Puppies and more

This is usually the most favorite event of the week.

During dead hour, there will be puppies at the fountain.

For dog lovers, it is the perfect way to reduce your stress by petting and playing with puppies.

Other events during dead hour include senior rock painting.

A first-generation end-of-year celebration will be held at 12:45 p.m.

At 4 p.m., Detroit Mercy Feud Night will be staged in the Fitness Center.

The women’s softball team plays a double-header as well. The first game begins at 3 p.m., the second game at 6 p.m. Both are against Bowling Green. 

Finally, if you are hungry and want a delicious dinner, stop by for “walking tacos” at 5 p.m.

Wednesday, April 17: De-Stress Fest

The De-Stress Fest is the perfect way to reduce your anxious nerves.

It will take place at the Fitness Center from 4:30-7:30 p.m.

Raffles and prizes, free food, laser tag, food darts, an obstacle course, massages and more are planned.

 “Last year we raffled $3,000 worth of prizes, all of which were donated by local businesses,” said Matthew Higley, assistant director of University Recreation.

Thursday, April 18: Tunnel Tours

Seniors will have an event all to themselves.

Tours of the tunnels that run beneath campus will be offered to graduating seniors.

Wear shoes and clothes you are not worried about getting dirty and muddy.

Seniors interested in the tour should meet at the clock tower. The tour will end at the College of Heath Professions Building.

“We ask that seniors make a suggested gift of $20.19 to honor their graduation year,” said Jackie Elliott, assistant director of annual giving. “The committee has chosen to have the funds raised go to help support the student pantry.”

The seniors who donate will also have their names posted on the donor wall on the crowdfunding site, listed under Donor Honor Roll, and will additionally receive a special invitation for a senior event on May 10.

“Any student that is graduating this year can sign up for a short 20-minute silly, but fun and haunted tour, of the underground tunnels that connect the Detroit Mercy main buildings,” said Timothy Nelson.

There will also be a KCP de-stress and chill event at 4 p.m.

Monday, April 22: Midnight Pancakes

To end Dead Week, there will be a midnight pancake breakfast in the Titan Dining Room for those studying late.

It is free. No card swipe is necessary.
