Titans open this week; MSU game Friday

On November 5, 2019

With their basketball season opening this week, the Titan women have been working nonstop.

The team was projected in pre-season voting to finish ninth place in the Horizon League but head coach Bernard Scott says he definitely does not see that being the case.

“I think they would be surprised by how much improved we are,'' said Scott.

Proving the league wrong is one of the biggest motivations that this team has.

Transfer Maxine Moore said she believes that the team brings much more to the table.

Moore is known to be a strong presence around her teammates and hopes to use her leadership skills this year.

Some other names come to mind when Scott talks about the impressive talent that’s on the squad.

Zoey Oatis, a senior, is finishing up her career with the Titans.

In the 2018-19 season, the veteran guard put up 8.1 points, 4.6 rebounds, 1.8 steals and 0.9 assists.

Aly Reiff is another talent, a junior transfer from South Whitley, Indiana. She originally attended Xavier, where she shot 37.8 percent from behind the line.

Reiff is a forward but she calls herself a “shooting post,” being known as a versatile player.

Both Reiff and Moore praise coach Scott for the energy and positivity he brings as well as a message that many admire: “Coaches shouldn’t have to coach effort.”

Scott feels confidence in all his players and said that everyone will see playing time this year.

He said there is no reason that he should call out anyone on the team for not being prepared.

Spectators “should expect a team that’s up-tempo and plays hard,” he said. “We’re picked to finish ninth and I don’t see us finishing there but they will be surprised by how improved we are.”

The Titans will be facing many big teams this winter, including Michigan State, Loyola Chicago, rival Oakland University and many others.
