Coming into my freshman year at the university four years ago, I had no idea what to expect.
I was thinking, “Oh my gosh, I hope I have friends and I hope I don’t fail out of school.”
It was a lot different than the average fresh-out-of-high school 18-year-old was thinking at the time.
I was recruited to play college golf here at Detroit Mercy.
I could have gone to a handful of other colleges, but I liked it here because of a lot of different factors.
One of them was that my brother Brian played here from 2006-10 and during those times I would go to a lot of his tournaments with my parents and watch the team.
So, I knew that it was a championship-caliber type of team given the work ethic that everyone had, and I wanted to be a part of it.
Another reason was the guys on the team.
During my visit, I got along great with them and I could feel that they were close, like a family.
I have met many of my best friends at this school, and I will have lifelong relationships because of the university.
The most important part to me and my family is the academic part.
I knew that I would be well taken care of by my professors, coaches and advisors.
Academics at the university play a big role in attracting many of the best athletes who go here.
With the business, nursing, architecture and liberal arts programs all making positive steps, you can see why I chose this college.
The best part is that professors know you by name because of class sizes.
The most people I’ve had in a class is around 40; the smallest, eight.
That is one of the reasons why I love it here.
Everything is accessible and you're able to get to the right resources quickly.
While the university still has a way to go in many departments, the positives out weigh the negatives.
I am glad I chose Detroit Mercy and wish the university only the best after I graduate in May.
