The Student Alumni Association is hosting its annual Day of Giving next week on Tuesday, Feb. 18.
The purpose of this day is to inform students on the importance of alumni engagement with the university.
Every year, the focus is on educating students, thanking donors and giving back to the community through “time, talent and treasure.”
Students and alumni are encouraged to spend a portion of their “time” helping with an event or activity or serving on a board at Detroit Mercy.
Using talents to teach others or share a skill or career experience constitutes the “talent” portion of the saying, whereas monetary donations are known as the “treasure.”
“This is a chance for students to meet some of the more engaged alumni that have knowledge to share,” said Angelina Jaroszewski, alumna and assistant director of Alumni Relations.
“This is an opportunity that students shouldn’t pass,” she said.
Brendan Magolan is co-chair of the Student Alumni Association.
“The Day of Giving is a proactive approach to get current students prepared to be alumni, and for students to learn the value of alumni contributions,” he said. “We have new activities that we hope students can (use to) connect and bond with alumni.”
Students can look forward to free golf cart rides to class from 9 a.m. until noon.
Rides will leave from Shiple Hall and go anywhere on campus.
There will be a morning mentoring session, games and a photo booth for students to enjoy and a free pasta lunch from 12:45 to 2 p.m. in Fountain Lounge.
Criminal justice major and association co-chair Andre Moon encourages students to come out.
“There’s a chance to win a pair of Apple Airpods, and a Little Caesars Arena package,” Moon said. “All you have to do is show up.”
The Feb. 18 event will run from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.
