This Valentine's Day: the gift of self-love

On February 11, 2020

Valentine’s Day is a time for couples and people in love.

The holiday is advertised everywhere.

The price of roses is spiking and store fronts are filled with pink and red hearts.

The true history of Valentine’s day isn’t favored but now the day is marketed as a time for romance and love.

But what if you have no one to spend the romantic holiday with?

The best act of love can come from within, self-love.

You can show yourself appreciation.

If you were single on Valentine’s Day, what would be your dream self-care day?

One student told me he would “stay at home and do nothing.”

Or take himself on a lavish shopping spree at Saks Fifth Avenue.

He would buy Gucci shoes and a “Chanel briefcase, if they had it.”

He would end the night at J. Alexander’s ordering macaroni and cheese, steak and fries.

Another student said she would begin her self-care day at a “trendy brunch place in Ferndale.”

She would order “a scramble with bottomless mimosas.”

“Then I would get my nails done, go shopping and buy new clothes,” she said. “I would go to Maggiano’s for dinner. That’s my favorite restaurant.”

She would order baked ziti, and to wind down the night she would go home and light a mahogany teakwood candle from Bath and Body Works.

Finally, she would put on a face mask, draw a bath with bath bombs, drink a glass of white Moscato and listen to chill music – “like The Weeknd.”

You do not have to wait until Valentine’s Day to show yourself a little love but when you are alone on the couples holiday it is the perfect cure to self-loathing.

Even if you don’t have a dream budget, doing small things you don’t normally have time for is just as nurturing.

Valentine’s Day is a time for love, whether it comes from a partner, a pet, family or yourself.

Self-love is the root of all love.
