Titans look poised to make noise
With a 5-3 Horizon League record following recent wins over UIC and Milwaukee, the Titans have set themselves up for something positive to close out the season.
Currently ranked fourth in the conference with nine games of league competition left, it’s safe to say that the Titans want to stay near the top of the field.
Even the team’s recent losses have been tight and they have not stopped competing, losing close bouts to Cleveland State and Purdue Fort Wayne by two points each.
Antonie Davis continues to surpass many former Detroit Mercy, Horizon League and NCAA players as his scoring continues to dazzle. Davis recently moved up the record books into a tie for 29th place for most 3-pointers in NCAA history with 385 and still has more games to continue to rise the ranks before the end of his senior year.
This year, Davis has set the standard among all-time Titans, recently breaking Rashad Phillips’s scoring record that stood for two decades.
Although Davis has been making the headlines recently, other talent on the team has been able to stand out as well.
Forward Madut Akec has been the big man on fire for the Titans, averaging 14.1 points per game along with 8.1 rebounds. Akec also has an impressive 49.4 percent field goal percentage as a first-year Titan.
Before the season started, the Titans were predicted to finish in fifth place among Horizon League competition. The team is currently exceeding expectations and could pick up where it left off last season but with different results.
The season remains fluid with some games being canceled due to COVID-19, and a five-game road trip looms. But the team appears to be on the rise due to the consistent performances by numerous players as they prepare themselves for what could be a long conference tournament run – perhaps to make it even farther than last year’s quarter-finals loss.
