The Detroit Mercy Men’s lacrosse team is on pace for its worst season record-wise since 2016. The Titans are sitting at 1-8 with two games left to go in the regular season, the team’s first in the ASUN conference after previously competing in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
Despite the struggles on the field, Tyler Hart, a senior goalie, said the team is focused on the upcoming conference tournament.
“So far, it has been a battle. We have faced some great opponents and have grown a lot as a team,” Tyler said. “We have basically broken the season down into sections…we are hoping to scrap out wins in the next few games and earn a bid into our conference tournament in May.”
Only the top four teams, based on regular-season conference standings, will advance to the ASUN Cham- pionship tournament, which begins May 5 in Alabama.
Hart said the team has been dealing with injuries, including to senior midfielder Matt Blevins who is out with a leg injury. Tyler called him “an important piece.”
The team has also been forced off its home field as Detroit Mercy is preparing to replace the turf on Titan Field in May. The team has been playing home games and practicing in nearby Birmingham.
“It is definitely an adjustment but we have had great support from the community and they have made it feel like a true home,” Hart said.
Head Coach Chris Kolon, who has led the Titans since 2014, said his theme this year has been all about growth.
“We have a lot of young/inexperienced guys and we are attempting to learn as we go,” Kolon said.
