Second 'Sonic' a delight for all ages

For the past two years, a trip to the movie theater has been all but impossible due to the coronavirus pandemic.

But now, with cases down, more and more people are starting to return to theaters for highly-anticipated releases.

Last weekend, I went to see “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” in theaters fol- lowing its April 8 release date. The titular hedgehog hero is voiced by Ben Schwartz and the main villain, Dr. Robotnik, is played by comedic legend Jim Carrey.

I was really excited to go see this movie in particular because it was a childhood favorite for me growing up.

I’ve always been a huge fan of Sonic; I’ve spent countless hours playing the video games and had many toys as a kid.

After viewing the first Sonic movie, which came out amid the pandemic in 2020, I knew that the second movie had to be just as good if not better.

The theater was packed with children and also adults who were excited to watch the film.

A few kids came in dressed in custom Sonic gear including t-shirts, hats and shoes.

The film did not disappoint me one bit.

There were plenty of nostalgic moments, which was my favorite part about watching it.

In the film, Sonic has to fight not only Dr. Robotnik, but his new sidekick, Knuckles, voiced by Idris Elba. The evil duo search for an emerald with the power to destroy civilizations as Robotnik is obsessed with defeating Sonic once and for all. The gold ring-loving hero, however, gets some help with a sidekick of his own in Tails, voiced by Colleen O’Shaughnessey, as they try to locate the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands.

The new characters in the sequel added to the excitement, although the film also relies on other returning characters including Sonic’s human friend Tom Wachowski, played by James Marsden.

Surprisingly, there was a lot of comedy included in the movie. A lot of moments that made the entire theater burst out in laughter.

In the end, the movie was really great and if I could go back and watch it again I would.

In my opinion, it is one of the best films that has been released so far this year. My overall rating on a ten-point scale would be an eight.

I’m not the only one who enjoyed it, apparently. The film has a 97 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, and a New York Times reviewer called it a “fast-paced romp that’s silly, filled with quips and unabashedly for children.”

So far, the film has earned more than $89 million in the U.S. and Canada, including $72 million in the regions during its opening weekend, according to IMBD. Worldwide, the film has grossed more than $164 million and there are already plans for a third installment to the franchise, although it’s unclear when it will be released.

I would recommend “Sonic 2” to any child or adult thinking about going to watch the film.

It will definitely be worth the trip.
