Over the summer, the University of Detroit Mercy installed new turf at Titan Field in what the athletic department dubbed a “big upgrade.” The work was completed on Aug. 1, just in time for the new school year, giving student-athletes one more thing to be excited about for their athletic seasons.

Cece Muskovac, a fifth-year senior on the women’s soccer team said the new turf is much “softer” than the past.

“The old field was cement hard and there were multiple holes scat- tered throughout the field,” she said. “But overall the new turf looks very nice and it allows all student-athletes to be able to perform at their best.” She said it took a bit of getting used to but is much better than what the team had been using.

“It has helped all of us, especial- ly mentally, because we have had countless injuries on the old turf,” she said. “So with the new field we feel more comfortable and confident playing on it. Our team is grateful that our school was able to provide us student-athletes with a field that would allow us to compete and perform for championships.”

The men’s and women’s soccer teams were the first to break in the new turf. The women’s team started their season Aug. 21 with a tie against the Broncos of Western Michigan. The men soon followed Sept. 1 with a 2-1 victory over Chicago State.

The men’s and women’s lacrosse teams have kicked off their fall prac- tices on the new field as well.

“Big upgrade from before,” said senior Kyle Loke, a captain on the men’s lacrosse team. “The new turf has been great to play on.”

The men’s lacrosse team will host multiple teams this fall in exhibitions including the University of Indianap- olis and Lewis University.

Detroit Mercy has also allowed Loyola High School to use the field for home football games.
