Teammate reflects on the return of star Antoine Davis

The author, Jordan Phillips, is a senior forward on the men’s basketball team.

Antoine Davis, Detroit Mercy’s all-time leading scorer, is back for one more season after putting his name in the transfer portal to poten- tially leave.

As his teammate, I speak for myself, and the Titan community, in saying we’re pleased to have him back because of the ridiculous amount of help and media coverage he brings to the university.

And Twan, as we call him, is happy to be back.

When I asked how he felt about it, his face brightened up.

“It’s great to be back and being able to finish my college career where it all started for me,” he said.

What are his expectations this season?

“I’m just hoping my team and I are able to bring a conference cham- pionship back to this program, along with a great run in March Madness,” he told me.

Twan said he ultimately was deciding between staying at Detroit Mercy or transferring to Kansas State, Maryland or BYU.

“I chose to come back because I just felt that it wouldn’t have felt right to leave this program not on a high note and I think that I owe this program that,” he said.

I was also able to speak with a number of our teammates who explained how pleased they were
to have him back as well. Some newcomers even said that his return was the reason that prompted them to take a chance at this university.

As for myself, I am happy to have my guy back for one final season. I’ve been here for a year now but had to redshirt last year so this would be my first year playing with him.

I’ve known Twan since we were in middle school back in Texas, so we honestly go way back. Twan has always been a killer on the court who can shoot the lights out and I feel as though we complement each other greatly as teammates, so I can’t wait to tear up the Horizon League alongside him.

I’m confident when it’s all said and done, Twan has to be considered as one of the greatest college players in D1 history considering his career statistics, and I’m just happy that I can be along the journey to experience it.
