The Detroit Mercy women’s soccer team is having a season to celebrate and could be heading towards a conference ring.
Last year the team finished a frustrating season 3-13-1. This season, with three games to go, the Titans have already doubled their win total from last year and are sitting at 6-7-1.
More importantly, the team is 4-3 in Horizon League play with 12 points, tied for first in the conference. This comes after the Titans were picked in preseason polls to finish 10th in the 11-team league. The record includes an undefeated 5-0-1 mark at Titan Field.
The team kicked off the season hot winning three straight, including an exhibition win over interstate rival Eastern Michigan. This start would bring a big time matchup just before fall break when the Wright State Raiders. Winner would claim the top spot in the Horizon League Conference.
The Titans would jump out to a quick lead and would carry a 2-0 lead into halftime. After the Raiders cut the lead in half, the Titans added a third goal and held on to win 3-2.
“It was surreal,” Junior Erica Toupin, who scored her first goal of the game to put the team up 2-0, said after the game. “I thought I wasn’t going to get to it but I did. It was kind of a fluke goal but I got to it and at the end of the day that’s all that matters.”
Most recently, the Titans lost 3-0 to IUPUI on the road after mustering just eight shots on goal.
The Titans play next on Oct. 13 at Milwaukee in a game that starts at 6 p.m.
The team will be back at Titan Field October 22 to face Purdue Fort Wayne. It will finish the regular season with a short road trip to Rochester to battle the Golden Grizzlies of Oakland University.
“I think we’ve just been working really well as a unit,” Junior Paige Myers said. “Obviously we’ve played a few years with each other now and know how each other works. Game after game after game we keep on getting stronger and we’ve been really solid.”
