It’s been a decade of deadlifts, dance classes and dedication to health and wellness.

The University of Detroit Mercy’s Fitness Center turned 10 last month, and those who run it have no plans of slowing down its programming any time soon.

The center offers fitness classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Fitness 101 is an introductory course on Tuesdays from 5:30 p.m to 6:30 p.m., while Fitness 202 is offered on Thursdays.

A Zumba class is also available on Tuesdays from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. You can sign up for these classes by downloading the app “CORQ” and signing in with your Detroit Mercy email.

The fun doesn’t stop there.

The university has a plethora of Intramural Sports that you can sign up for at

If you wish to get more serious about starting your fitness journey, the school also offers personal train- ers who can get you on the right path (check school website for details and rates), which also includes a referral to a nutritionist.

Of course, if a simple workout is what you desire, the center is open seven days a week.

Many students already use the fitness center for their routine workouts, whether it’s the indoor track, basketball courts, or weights and cardio machines.

Freshman Martell Underwood lifts weights every day and is content for the most part, although he did express a desire for a better variety.

“More bench presses and squat racks would be nice,” he said. “Other than that, it’s great.”

Sophomore Kateri Sollars, however, said she sees room for improvement.

“I think it needs more equipment,” she said. “Some of their machines have parts missing or they fall off. It has to be fixed.”

Noah Elkins comes weekly to play basketball and is a big fan of the courts.

“I think the court is pretty solid,” he said. “The rims are even solid too, which is a plus.”
