No. 0 heads to the rafters as UDM honors senior hoopers
A tough loss last month against Wright State was still a day of celebration at Calihan Hall for the last regular season game for the men’s basketball team.
Senior star Antoine Davis would score 34 points in the 82-71 loss against Trey Calvin and Wright State University. Before tip-off though, there would be a moment to celebrate all seniors on the team who would be playing their final game in front of the Titan faithful.
This year’s team has seven seniors: Damezi Anderson, Antoine Davis, Buay Koka, Gerald Liddell, TJ Moss, A.J. Oliver and Arashma Parks.
Each player was greeted by President Donald Taylor, Athletic Director Robert Vowels & Head Coach Mike Davis and were gifted with a custom game portrait.
Later, during halftime, the university also rec- ognized all seniors from cheer, pep band and the dance team.
Despite the loss, the celebration continued after the final buzzer, as the school recognized Davis by retiring his No. 0, the first time an active player has ever received such an honor.
Davis was given the game net from the Jan 14 matchup against Robert Morris, where he became the new NCAA 3-point leader.
His No. 0 is only the 11th in Titan history to be retired joining players like Spencer Haywood, Eli Holman, Willie Green and many more.
Fellow Titan great Earl Cureton spoke at the podium during the ceremony to honor the hard work of the student-athlete.
“For your master’s degree this year, carrying a 3.9, you are talking about a well-rounded individual,” he said. “When we want to talk about a student-athlete and look it up in the dictionary we want to see a picture of Antoine Davis.”
Davis, speaking to the crowd, said he was very thankful to the university for welcoming him five years ago.
“It’s an unreal feeling,” Davis told The Detroit News after the ceremony. “A lot of people don’t get their jersey retired until five, six years, maybe even 10 years down the line. And for that to happen today is special.”
