Rock climbing highlight of upcoming ‘Adventure Series’ outing
The Detroit Mercy URec Adventure Series is back and will be taking over Planet Rock in Madison Heights on April 12th for an evening of climbing, community and fun.
The event, scheduled to run from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., will allow students opportunities to try rock wall climbing.
Whether you’re an experienced climber or have never tried it before, organizers say there is no need to be nervous.
The event will include training for those who are new to the sport. URec, the school’s recreation department, will provide transportation to and from Planet Rock for those living on campus.
The latest outing is part of an ongoing series that allows members of the Detroit Mercy community to join with peers in a variety of activities throughout Metro Detroit.
From kayaking to zip lining to glow skating, the program is focused on providing engaging opportunities for students to try new things in the region around campus while building a sense of community.
Mike Wynn, assistant director of URec, has overseen the Adventure Series since he started his position one year ago.
He’s determined to grow the program and promote it so that more students show interest, and eventually, the capacity for trips may grow to accommodate more students.
“My involvement in the program is looking to grow it and offer more unique opportunities for our students to have fun off campus,” said Wynn.
The Adventure Series offers trips at a discounted rate, so cost-con- scious students can take advantage by paying less than if they went independently. It also helps out-of- towners get to better explore the area.
Additionally, organizers say going in a large group helps students form bonds and make memories with fellow adventure-minded Titans.
“These trips really allow our students to build a sense of community with others that share a passion for similar interests,” Wynn said.
The cost to attend the April 12 outing is $10.
To register, forms can be filled out and submitted at the fitness center.
