REVIEW: Cyberpunk 2077 a gaming comeback story
Cyberpunk 2077 is an action role-playing game developed and published by CD Projekt Red, the same developers who are best known for the series The Witcher.
The game takes place in Night City in the year 2077. Night City is a megacity located in North California, a free state, and is controlled by corporations. The game follows V, the player’s character who is a mercenary, or in the world of cyberpunk a “Solo” or “Edgerunner,” who is hired to steal a prototype biochip which is known as the Relic. The Relic contains what is left of Johnny Silverhand, who is played by Keanu Reeves.
When the game first came out it received mixed responses, while some praised its narrative, setting, art style and music, others couldn’t fully enjoy those aspects because of the bugs that severely hindered the gameplay experience. The bugs were such an issue that the PlayStation Store removed the game entirely until the bugs were fixed. However, this failed launch of the game did not stop CD Projekt Red. They went to work and soon many of the bugs that were experienced on launch were fixed.
However, for them that wasn’t enough because in Sept. 2023 CD Projekt Red released a game changing update along with one of the most expensive DLC (downloadable content) in gaming history called Phantom Liberty. The update completely overhauled the games core mechanics giving a fresh new gameplay experience.
Along with the update, Phantom Liberty brought a new spy thriller story and location to Night City, a place called Dogtown. Dogtown is a city within the city of Night City. It is classified as a combat zone, and is controlled by Kurt Hansen, the leader of the BARGHEST faction. There the character V is contacted with a job, the job being to save the President of the NUSA. Along the journey you meet many interesting characters including a sleeper agent named Solomon Reed, who is played by Idris Elba.
Cyberpunk 2077 is a fantastic game that offers many interesting stories, characters and locations for the player to explore and interact with. While the launch of the game was rough, the new DLC and updates completely changed the game for the better, and it’s safe to say Cyberpunk is now one of the greatest comebacks in gaming history.
