Ford grant helps students, faculty serve

The Institute for Leadership and Service, through Ford Community Corps Partnerships, funds many service-learning projects on and around the campus

These projects involve students who are required to do approximately 10 hours of community service.

Student leaders and faculty from various departments propose service-learning projects, and the institute selects ten to fund. The teams then funds specific plans of how they want the students to do the community service.

So the community service part in these granted courses can be more focused and with a clearer objectives than a regular service-learning course.

Officials with the Institute for Leadership and Service believe this allows students to have a greater impact on the community. The students can be more engaged in these opportunities rather than going to a random agency to do random assignments.

Shan Ran, administrator for The Institute for Leadership and Service, oversees the ten projects and provides support. 

These ten partnerships are receiving grants in 2011-12:

-Gloria Albrecht and Debra Threloff for master of community-development students to develop neighborhoods between McNichols/Puritan and Livernois/Greenlawn.

-Dionne Bennett and Derrick Gorden and Valmir Merkaj for liberal arts students to design and implement workshops for African American children through Youthville Detroit.

-Claudia Bernasconi and Mariarosaria DiPalo for architecture students to empower middle school students from the Detroit Community Schools in Brightmoor to generate ideas about their neighborhood and the city of Detroit, as well as to enhance their ability to express and communicate those ideas. 

-Amy Derezyck and David Dumais for health profession students to provide a preventative health awareness program in multiple Detroit Public Schools, including preventing the spread of communicable disease via hand washing.

-Dave Koelsch and Jade Nabbouh for law students to provide assessment and consulting to low-income immigrants from a vast array of countries in the Detroit Area.

-Jim Montate and Mary Bee and Rami Nazar for biology students to tutor and guide students at Loyola High School and students at Mercy Education Project.

-Joseph Pia and Anai Orozco for accounting students to help tax preparation for low-income taxpayers through IRS sponsored VITA Program.

-Maia Platt and Bhavi Shah for health profession students to work with Medicare and Medicaid patients of the McAuley Heath Center on establishing their awareness of benefits.

-Mark Schumack and Alexa Rihana and Earnest Cleary for engineering students to perform energy audits for the residences of low-income people in northwest Detroit.

-Joon Sung and Danielle Strace for law students to assist homeowners who face foreclosure eviction.
