Anderson's jumping, dunking talent surfaced early

On January 22, 2013

Everyone who has played a sport has known an athlete who could do something better than anyone else on the team.

When it comes to dunking a basketball, no Titan does it like senior Doug Anderson, whose slams have been featured on ESPN.

Anderson can clear the vertical jump measure in the weight room, which means he can leap higher than 50 inches.

Anderson discovered his talent early in life while playing on his eighth grade middle school team.

"Yeah, I remember my first dunk," he said. "Everyone always asks me that question. It was in the last game of my eighth grade season."

When he leapt over an opponent and slammed the ball, he stunned the crowd.

"But I just kept playing like nothing happened," Anderson said.

Even though Anderson had this very specific ability, colleges didn't want to recruit him because scouts feared he might be one-dimensional.

After two years at Mott Community College, Anderson made his final decision to play at Detroit.

"The school was close to home and my family thought it was a good idea to play with Ray McCallum," he said.

McCallum, a junior guard, said he has enjoyed playing with Anderson.

"Doug Anderson is by far the most exciting player I have played with, and I have played on a lot of good teams with a lot of great athletes," he said. "When Doug plays with emotion and fire, he makes our team even better. Doug's athleticism is just on another level. I don't even know how it is possible to do the things he can do."

Titan Juwan Howard, Jr., has similar praise for Anderson.

"I like playing with Doug," Howard said. "He is one of the most athletic players I have ever seen. I've never seen anyone do the things he can do and it's really amazing to me."

As a red-shirt sophomore, Howard didn't get the chance to play with the Titans last year.

"His dunks are crazy!" Howard said of Anderson.
