The University of Detroit Mercy is collaborating with the Archdiocese of Detroit to award future Catholic school students $10,000 and $20,000 grants.
This should be a grand opportunity for future freshmen.
Admissions counselor Matt Fortescue sees it as a big incentive for students.
The $20,000 award will be granted to those who went to Catholic school from grade school to high school.
The $10,000 scholarship will be granted to those who went to a Catholic high school.
This scholarship will come into place in the fall term of 2015.
Though the program is designed to benefit future students and to encourage enrollment, it is leaving a bad taste for some current freshmen who are arriving a year too earlier to benefit.
“That would have been beneficial and very helpful taking responsibility off of my mom,” said engineering student Carl Williams. “That would have made my decision to come here easier.”
Andrew Mullen, a robotics and mechatronics major, sees it differently.
He said the university has to starts somewhere.
