Uncommon Grounds

UDM has an amazing little wonder tucked away in the basement of the Student Center, the Grounds Coffehaus.

Run by UDM students, the Coffehaus offers an array of coffee as well as espresso and hot chocolate, and if you’re not a coffee drinker then there is juice and water for you.

There are all kinds of candy and quick lunches, like macaroni and noodles.

The Grounds Coffeehaus doesn’t just offer some great edibles, but it is known for hosting plays, poetry, comedy and music.

“Last year a local jazz band was touring and they stopped by and performed,” recalled sophomore Roberty Pyteo. “It was pretty cool.”

Several of the UDM Theatre Company’s plays have been featured in the coffee house, as well this semester’s “What a Wonderful Life,” scheduled for December.

The Coffehaus offers plenty of entertainment including the plethora of board games along the bar, but it also a great place to study.

It is extremely peaceful during the day, and the traffic flow is never too hectic.

Freshman Amanda Chiu works at the Coffeehaus.

“There are always people here, but it never gets overwhelmingly busy,” she said.

The Grounds has even been known as a great place for people to get a quick nap.

The Coffeehaus is open Sunday, 5 p.m. to midnight; Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to midnight; Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Saturday, 9 a.m. to noon.
