Oakland game Sunday ‘big deal’

Detroit Titan Anton Wilson is one of the top three-point shooters in the Horizon League – and not a man of many words.

But he agreed recently to sit down for a Q&A with The Varsity News.

Anton, you’re a top three-point shooter in the country. What do you do to keep shooting at a high percentage?

I put in extra time in the gym and try to get as many shots up as I can.

When the three is not falling for you, how do you get back in rhythm?

I just keep shooting. Once one goes in, I know that they will start to fall.

It’s been an up-and-down year for the team. How do you guys stay positive?

We take things one game at a time, and go as hard as we can every night.

You have the Oakland game this week. How big is it for you guys to go there and win?

It’s a really big deal. It’s one of the team goals to embrace the Oakland rivalry this year. We remember getting swept last year, and it’s been a game we have had marked down all season.

A lot of players have been coming out of your hometown of Flint lately. What does that mean to you?

It’s cool to see. Growing up in Flint, you heard the negatives about how the city is dead and bankrupt, how we have tons of murders. It’s cool for myself and others to get out of the city and show the world that Flint has some basketball talent and that we’re trying to make a better life for ourselves.

What motivates you to play better?

Growing up, I saw tons of players get into trouble or not put in the work and ruin their chance to play basketball. The will to “not waste the opportunity” makes me push myself to make myself better.

With a sub-.500 record in the conference, do you think your team could make a run in the conference tourney and be the “Cinderella” at the Big Dance this year?

For sure. We have tons of talent. I feel like it’s just a matter of everything clicking at the same time. If we do that, we can make a big run, and I know a lot of teams are worried about that.
