Forty years after NCAA title, fencing team tries to recapture championship legacy
Forty years ago, the men's fencing team captured Detroit's first-ever NCAA title. Forty years later, the 1972 team is still the only NCAA championship at the university, leaving a legacy that has lasted throughout the years. UDM's only national champions were honored Sunday at the men's basketball game when former players and coaches gathered at half court during a timeout.

Learning to lead
Senior captain Emily Boissonneault finds her place in final season
It might be hard to understand Emily Boissonneault when she says she's "finally found her place" on the women's lacrosse team. The senior ranks first in the Titan record books in goals (188), points (208) and caused turnovers (119). She's been a National Lacrosse Conference all-league selection since UDM's inaugural season in 2009.

Titans need overtime to extinguish Flames
DETROIT---Jalesa Jones has been called on to defend opposing teams' best players throughout the season. She answered the call again Saturday. Jones held UIC senior Jasmine Bailey—the Horizon League's second leading scorer—without a point in crunch time as Detroit escaped with a 62-57 overtime win at Calihan Hall.

Titans rout Ramblers
DETROIT---It's safe to say Detroit Mercy has recently owned its series with Loyola. But Thursday night's 84-59 drubbing might be one of the most one-sided of the teams' 66 meetings. The Titans used a complete game to beat their Jesuit rivals for the 10th time in 11 games.

Hard workers
Coach applauds team's work on and off the court
The UDM men's tennis team may be one of the hardest-working teams on campus, both on and off the court. Winners of the Titan Cup (a competition between all athletic teams to support the other teams), the team also earned the highest team Grade Point Average last year.

Forget everything you know about the men's lacrosse team. Throw away their dramatic run to the MAAC championship game last spring, disregard their best players and look past the fact that they're the first-ever Division I lacrosse team in Michigan.

Before Wolverines, Titans must battle two tough teams: ranked Delaware, rival OSU
Before the men's lacrosse team can even think about playing the Wolverines, they have to worry about two big-name opponents. The Titans open their season on the road at Delaware Feb. 4 and at Ohio State Feb. 9, and they are looking forward to the contests.

The Titans, Michigan's first Division I lacrosse team, face upstart from Ann Arbor
History will be made Sunday, Feb. 12. The UDM men's lacrosse team will host the Michigan Wolverines at Pontiac's Ultimate Soccer Arena in the first-ever game between two Michigan-based Division I teams. The Wolverines added the sport this past year.

Moving up in the standings
With a win against our longtime foe Loyola on Wednesday, Jan. 25, we were put back in the race for winning a Horizon League title. Our team is currently on a three-game winning streak. The win put us at .500, and we followed that up with a win against the Flames of UIC.

From Russia with love
International tennis player Elena Strakhova finds a home at UDM
Figuring out your future in three months is tough, but the way Elena Strakhova did it is pretty close to a miracle. Strakhova is from Zarechny, Russia, a small city of 70,000 citizens. In May 2010, she did not believe she would be going to college.

UDM to celebrate female athletics Saturday
Female high school athletes will be on campus Saturday, Feb. 4, when the UDM athletic department hosts the annual celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day. "It's basically a day celebrating women's athletics and Title IX," said Amy Gasahl, assistant director of compliance.
