Howard will play basketball in Spain
Juwan Howard Jr. will be taking his talents to Spain.
The former Titan signed a contract with Café Candelas Breogan of the Spanish League on Sept. 9.
After graduating, Howard spent part of his summer playing for the Miami Heat in the NBA Summer League.
“I am very excited for Juwan and his family,” said head coach Ray McCallum in a statement. “To be able to graduate and then continue to play professionally is a dream come true for him and I wish him a lot of success.”
A transfer from Western Michigan University, Howard became a two time All-Horizon League Second Team selection during his UDM career.
Tommy’s expands coffee offerings
UDM’s campus now has coffee with a little bit of a more “local” taste to it.
Tommy’s Smoothies & Snack Bar in the Fitness Center is offering products from Great Lakes Coffee Roasting Company.
Great Lakes has a flagship location in Midtown Detroit, as well as an outlet in Bloomfield Hills, but now students will be able to enjoy the company’s dark and light roast coffees, hot tea, cold brew coffee, fresh brewed iced tea and Ghirardelli hot chocolate, among other offerings, right on campus.
The Fitness Center locations hours are Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, 1 to 7 p.m.
UDM gets top tier magazine ranking
UDM remained in the top 25 of the Midwest Best Regional Universities ranked by the U.S. News & World Report’s best colleges.
Tied for 23rd in the 2016 edition, UDM has been listed in the top tier of Midwest Best Regional Universities for the 15th consecutive year, according to a UDM news release.
“These national rankings reaffirm University of Detroit Mercy’s quality academic programs, outstanding students and dedicated faculty and staff,” said UDM president Antoine Garibaldi in a statement. “UDM’s significant freshman class increase this fall is due to recognitions like these and the priority we place on academic excellence.”
There were three fellow Jesuit universities ahead of UDM on the list. Creighton University was first, Xavier University was sixth and John Carroll University was seventh. Horizon League rival Valparaiso University was fifth.
