OPINION: Saying farewell to Detroit Mercy

As I approach the final stretch of my academic journey, it is with a mix of excitement and nostalgia that I reflect upon my time at the University of Detroit Mercy. Since joining in Jan. 2021, I have experienced a multitude of opportunities, personal growth and unforgettable memories. From my involvement with the athletic department and student activities board to being a writer for The Varsity News, this institution has shaped me into the person I am today. As I prepare to graduate in the fall of 2023 and participate in the May 2024 commencement, I am grateful for the incredible experiences and individuals that have influenced my university years.

During my tenure at the University of Detroit Mercy, I actively engaged in various extracurricular activities. One of my most significant involvements was working with the athletic department. From assisting with game day operations to supporting student-athletes, I developed a deep appreciation for teamwork, dedication and perseverance. The camaraderie and shared passion within the department fostered an environment of growth and collaboration.

In addition to my role in the athletic department, I had the privilege of being a part of the student activities board. This position allowed me to contribute to the vibrant campus life by organizing events, fostering a sense of community and creating memorable experiences for my fellow students. Through this role, I learned the importance of effective planning, communication, and leadership, as well as the power of bringing people together.

As a writer for The Varsity News, I had the opportunity to share stories, capture moments and express my creativity through the written word. This experience not only enhanced my writing skills but also provided a platform to voice the perspectives and achievements of the university community. Being a part of this esteemed publication further ignited my passion for storytelling and journalism.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my time at the University of Detroit Mercy has been the incredible people I have encountered. Whether it was professors who challenged and inspired me, classmates who became lifelong friends or mentors who guided me along the way, these connections have greatly influenced my personal and intellectual growth. The diverse perspectives and support systems built during my university years have enriched my education beyond the classroom.

As I prepare to bid farewell to the University of Detroit Mercy, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the transformative experiences and relationships that have shaped my journey. The opportunities provided by my involvement with the athletic department, student activities board, and The Varsity News have taught me invaluable lessons in teamwork, leadership and self-expression. Moreover, the connections I have made with remarkable individuals will forever hold a special place in my heart.

As I look forward to the final semester and the upcoming commencement in May 2024, I am confident that the lessons and memories I have gained will serve as a foundation for my future endeavors. The University of Detroit Mercy has not only provided me with an exceptional education but has also empowered me to embrace my passions, pursue my dreams and make a positive impact on the world. I am excited to take what I learned from Detroit Mercy and share with others as I continue my journey throughout life!
