OPINION: ‘Dune: Part Two’ a sequel worth watching

The sequel to Dune, Dune: Part Two, came out on March 1 and it has fans raving. The film is directed by Denis Villeneuve, who co-wrote with Jon Spaihts.

This film is an epic science fiction film. The first movie is based off the book published in 1965 and written by Frank Herbert.

Dune: Part Two was supposed to be released in November 2023 but was delayed due to the Hollywood labor disputes.

The film has grossed over $369 million worldwide, which completely overtakes its $190 million budget. This has made Dune: Part Two the third highest grossing film in 2024.

The film includes many different action scenes that include love and lies. Many people agree that the sequel is what they have been waiting for.

The movie stars Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides, Zendaya as Chani, who is a young rebellious Fremen warrior, and Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica, who is Paul’s mother.

During the film, princess Irulan Corrino secretly records in a journal that Paul could still be alive.

Fremen troops, which include Paul and Lady Jessica, overcame a patrol. Once they Reach Tabr, some of the Fremen suspect that they are spies while others and Stilgar see what a mother and son from the “Outer World” will bring to Arrakis.

While there, Jessica is informed that their Reverend Mother is dying and that she must become her new replacement, though this comes with drinking the poisonous Water of Life.

Jessica proves herself and successfully transmutes the poison. After, she begins to receive the memories of every female ancestor in her lineage.

Jessica and Paul convince the Fremen of the prophecy. During this time, Chani and her friend believe that everything they have said is a false narrative created to manipulate them.

Then, Paul delivers a speech about not only seeking power. Chani develops respect for Paul after this.

After this, Chani begins to fall in love with Paul as he embraces his new Fremen ways. During all of this, Jessica travels south to unite with more Fremen fundamentalists.

While Paul stayed north, he reunites with Gurney Halleck which leads him to House Atreides. After an attack, Paul is forced to move south where he then drinks the Water of Life and falls into a coma. Chani figures out a way to awaken him but has trouble doing so because of his previous actions.

After getting out of his coma, Paul challenges Shaddam for the throne and demands Irulan’s hand in marriage.

Irulan agrees to Paul’s request on the condition that her father lives. Chani hears that Paul is getting married and proceeds to leave him.

Overall, this movie is great for movie goers who love a science fiction feel while getting a good amount of action.

There is also a sense of drama that plays into the film as well, which makes it even more interesting.

Though it would be helpful to see the first film before seeing the sequel, it is a great movie. It was rated an 8.9/10 on IMDb and 93 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Many reviews say that this could be one of the best films of the year.
