Student Arts Club gives students opportunities on diverse mediums

Whether you’re looking for a place for self-expression, to hone your artistic abilities or to learn new art mediums, the University of Detroit Mercy Students Arts Club (SAC) serves to bring Titans together to celebrate how art is not only diverse but also collaborative.

The Students Arts Club meets biweekly on Fridays. SAC prides itself on the diverse mediums it teaches its members. Some of the activities SAC has offered include painting, illustration, crocheting, book binding, resin and chalk to name a few. The president, Marissa Goins, develops workshops to help members become familiar with the mediums covered and helps create an inclusive environment for SAC’s members.

“The club is a place for people to just be themselves and learn that painting and drawing isn’t all that art is,” Goins said.

Above everything else though its president wants students to develop a new love for the arts.

“If people walk out of this room proud of what they have made, I know I’ve done something right,” Goins said.

This year SAC hosted its first ever T-shirt design competition, urging Titans to become more engaged in the club itself, as well as its decisions. Additionally, this shirt will be distributed to members to give them a sense of unity and allow them to make students more aware of SAC.

The winner, Bala Muthuraj, a Data Analytics major, created a watercolor butterfly design that won the hearts of SAC. Muthuraj spoke positively to his time in SAC, remarking it has “been a fantastic way to connect with others who share a passion for creativity.”

The club is viewed positively among its members. New members have enjoyed the chance to experiment with their abilities and learn new skills. Old members have enjoyed pursuing their favorite mediums and also have enjoyed watching the new members grow.

This year has been advantageous for SAC as its members and activity increased greatly. After a short hiatus last year, SAC is slowly gaining prestige as it explores many interactive workshops for its members. Additionally, the club celebrates its members’ accomplishments and pushes them towards bettering themselves through each exercise.

SAC has begun to spread its wings to social media this year. UDMARTSCLUB on Instagram sends out reminders and coverage of each of the club’s events.

In the future SAC hopes to continue branching into more media of art, including shoe painting, photography, baking/icing art, tie dye, rock painting as well as many student requested activities. They also plan on touring local arts museums in the coming years, including the Detroit Institute of Arts museum.

SAC is an ever-growing space for Titans to explore their creativity. With more workshops on the horizon, SAC plans to not only grow in the coming years, but also offer an array of experiences for its members.
