OPINION: Chiefs-Eagles not a great Super Bowl matchup for fans

We are days away from Super Bowl LIX. On Feb. 9, the defending champion Kansas City Chiefs will play the Philadelphia Eagles in New Orleans in a fight for the Lombardi Trophy.

The Chiefs, 1.5-point favorites as of Feb. 2, are looking to become the first team in NFL history to threepeat (win three Super Bowl titles in a row). It would be their fifth Super Bowl title. The Eagles look to upset the Chiefs and win their second Super Bowl title.

Many Americans, myself included, are extremely tired of seeing the Chiefs succeed. Most people feel that not only is it repetitive but also unfair. There have been many instances of the Chiefs benefiting from 50/50 calls on the field, and the Chiefs also are in the top 3 of most penalties called on opponents per game, at seven. What is also exhaustive is the inclusion of Taylor Swift in every game. I am not watching the game to see her, but I also realize that money talks and the Chiefs benefit hugely from having her there.

People may say that she has been shown less this year, but that is likely because Travis Kelce has had one of his worst scoring seasons of his career, recording three touchdowns and 823 yards.

Patrick Mahomes also had a down year, relative to his previous years, recording 3,928 yards and 26 touchdowns, putting him at seventh and ninth in the league, respectively.

In my opinion, the Chiefs should not be playing in this year’s Super Bowl. Many 50/50 calls went their way in their divisional game versus the Texans, as well as the AFC Conference Championship versus the Bills.

There are likely many other teams that America would have rather seen make it out of the NFC other than the Eagles. The two biggest complaints about the Eagles are their fans and the tush push play. First, many people believe that their fans are obnoxious.

While there are some diamonds in the rough, all people get the opportunity to see on social media is Eagles fans harassing fans of the opposing team. The unwritten rule is to never wear the opposing team’s colors to Philadelphia because it’s highly likely you will be verbally abused. Many people feel that Eagles fans are disrespectful and undeserving of another Super Bowl appearance, even though they arguably have the best roster in the NFL.

I am not excited about the Eagles being the representative of the NFC in New Orleans. As a Lions and Buccaneers fan, having Philadelphia and Kansas City go to New Orleans for a rematch of Super Bowl 59 is the worst possible outcome.

The Chiefs opened as 1.5 favorites, and they currently sit there now as well at -125 favorites for the money line. The over-under sits at 48.5, as of Feb. 2. While Kansas City is the favorite, most of America seems to be rooting for the Eagles to win.

With that being said, I, as well as many other Americans, would have rather seen a Super Bowl matchup between two teams like Buffalo and Detroit, or Baltimore and Washington for example.

In my opinion, this is the worst Super Bowl matchup in recent history. I feel that as each year goes on, I appreciate the Super Bowls of the past even more, as there was a bit more variation in teams.

Nevertheless, I will likely still watch this year’s Super Bowl, even though I can’t stand the teams in the game.
