In a milestone achievement for the University of Detroit Mercy (UDM), Joshua Copeland, a sophomore biology major, has become the first men’s soccer player in program history to be selected in the first round of the MLS draft. On Dec. 20, 2024, Copeland was drafted by the Colorado Rapids, a moment he describes as surreal.
“I was filled with excitement and joy knowing that a lot of hard work had paid off,” Copeland said. “It’s truly an honor to be a pro Titan.”
Copeland’s journey to the MLS was fueled by his exceptional work ethic and dedication. Drew Pierson, Copeland’s teammate and closest friend at UDM, emphasized his unwavering commitment both on and off the field.
“Josh always gave one hundred percent, whether on the field or in the classroom,” Pierson said. “He was a fantastic player, but what many people don’t know is how smart he is and how much he held himself to the same high standards everywhere.”
This work ethic resonated throughout the team.
“Josh never gave up on any plays,” Pierson said. “He led by example, and his constant effort motivated everyone to work even harder.”
Copeland’s ability to rise to the occasion in critical moments cemented his legacy as a Titan. One of the most memorable games came against Robert Morris, where he scored a game-tying goal in the final minutes.
“In the final moments, he took a perfect first touch off a header from a teammate and finished with a great strike,” Pierson said. “He always showed up in big moments when the team needed him the most.”
Coach Nate Kopunek echoed these sentiments, describing Copeland as the team’s most dangerous attacking player.
“Josh’s athleticism, quick first step, and ability to perform in big games set him apart,” Kopunek said. “His leap from freshman to sophomore year was significant, and he worked hard to embody everything it meant to be a Detroit Titan.”
Despite the pressures of collegiate athletics, Copeland handled challenges with resilience.
“Whenever he didn’t play to his standard, he used it as motivation to improve,” Pierson said. “Josh was determined to come back stronger every day.”
Reflecting on his approach to setbacks, Copeland said, “It’s important to face challenges head-on and use them as opportunities to grow. Every setback is a chance to come back stronger, and that mindset has shaped who I am today.”
Kopunek emphasized Copeland’s ability to adapt to higher levels of competition, a skill he believes will serve him well in the MLS.
“The transition will be challenging, but Josh is a smart kid on and off the field,” Kopunek said. “He has all the tools to grow and succeed.”
Although Copeland’s time at UDM lasted only three semesters, his influence on the program is profound.
“Josh was more than a brilliant player; he cared deeply about his friends, family and character,” Pierson said. “He was like a brother to everyone on the team.”
For UDM’s soccer program, Copeland’s journey represents a breakthrough.
“It’s not common for someone from UDM or the Horizon League to get drafted,” Pierson said. “Josh has given the team hope and a vision for what’s possible.”
Kopunek views Copeland’s success as a testament to the program’s potential.
“This is big for us,” he said. “Josh’s drafting shows that we can compete with the best and that our players have what it takes to reach the next level.”
As Copeland begins his professional career with the Colorado Rapids, he remains grateful for his time at UDM.
“This was a place that gave me an opportunity, and I’m willing to give anything back,” Copeland said.
His determination, a quality both Kopunek and Pierson highlighted, will continue to drive him.
“Josh has always been determined to be the best version of himself,” Pierson said. “That’s what got him here, and that’s what will carry him forward.”
For Copeland, the journey is just beginning, but his time as a Titan has left an indelible mark on UDM’s soccer program and inspired a new generation of players to dream bigger.
“Nothing is impossible if you work hard and have the right mindset,” Copeland said. “The continuous effort and sacrifices made will help you achieve your dreams.”
