A tradition that has been building every year is that millions of Americans get together to celebrate the Super Bowl Sunday night. It has become more than just a football game; it has become a national celebration that brings all types of people together. It has become a very social event, like other holidays, like Memorial Day and Labor Day. That is why I believe the Monday after the Super Bowl should be declared a national holiday.
Everyone Is In
It does not matter if you are a factory worker or the president of the United States, you are locked into the game. From the exciting halftime show, which always has a very popular performer, to the funny and entertaining commercials, the Super Bowl is more than just a sports event. Whether you are a football fan or not, you are still interested in the experience of watching the big game.
The Super Bowl is a shared experience that connects us as a nation. However, the game starts late on Sunday and most people must get up the following Monday and go to work or school.
Most Watched Event
The Super Bowl is not just any ordinary football game, it is a major social event that captures the attention of the entire country. Over 100 million people tune in to watch it, making it the most watched television event in the United States every year. For example, this year’s Super Bowl rating was the best ever, getting 127 million average viewers, beating out last year’s Super Bowl by 4 million. People don’t just watch the game; they have parties, cook big meals and invite friends and family over to watch and experience the game together. The Super Bowl is something that brings people together, whether they care about sports or not.
Super Bowl Hangover
The problem is that the Super Bowl generally ends late, especially if the game goes into overtime. On the East Coast, the game can end well after 11 p.m. and that’s not even counting the time people spend watching the post-game celebrations. By the time everyone finally goes to bed, it’s already very late. The next day, people are tired, hungover, and not in the mood to be productive. The Monday after the Super Bowl has to be one of the least productive days of the year.
If we made the Monday after the Super Bowl a holiday, we could avoid all of this. People would have a chance to recover, and businesses would not suffer.
President’s Day + Super Bowl
President’s Day which is a holiday celebrated on the third Monday in February, could be moved to the day after the Super Bowl. The nation could adjust the holiday, so we are able to celebrate President’s Day and recover from the Super Bowl events. This slight adjustment would help all Americans celebrate something that brings Americans together. Small things like this help bring people together and current politics, social issues and even the pandemic have driven people apart. The Super Bowl is one of the few things that still unites us as a country.
Maybe Next Year
The Monday after the Super Bowl should be a national holiday because it makes sense for everyone. It would give our nation a chance to build on an event that brings us together as a country and also gives us a chance to recover from a late-night celebration. It’s a simple idea that would have a big impact.
So, let’s push to make this happen because next season it could be our own Detroit Lions raising the Lombardi Trophy!
